Details of this retreat

The Savanna Hermitage is a solo retreat space inspired by meditation, qigong, yoga, and solitude in nature. It is a small, quiet retreat oriented toward facilitating lifestyles and practices of higher consciousness to maximize human potential, allowing the host and guests to evolve toward becoming the most empowered and enlightened human beings they can be.

As monks, hermits, sages, yogis, and other spiritual seekers and masters have been doing for millenia, the very simple lifestyle and practices minimize focus upon the lower chakra, lower consciousness physical realms of sensual indulgences and desires. This allows instead for the residents and guests to focus their time and energy more fully on the purely non-physical upper chakra, higher consciousness realms of non-attachment, equanimity, and pure higher awareness.

Cultivating a meditative lifestyle of higher consciousness is the core foundational practice at the Savanna Hermitage. Many forms of meditation and higher consciousness practice are welcome, including zen, mindfulness, vipassana, transcendental, qigong, yoga, and others. Guests are encouraged to spend an average minimum of 3 hours a day practicing sitting, lying down, walking/hiking, and movement meditation, qigong, yoga, and other higher consciousness practice, and are solitary and self-directed. The host is also available to facilitate meditation, qigong, and yoga practice upon request, and guests are welcome to share their practices with others upon request as well (optional).

In addition to the solo practice space in each guest room, the Hermitage property also has an outdoor meditation/qigong/yoga circle for solo and group practice, and also contains over a mile (1.6 kilometers) of walking meditation nature trails for guest use and enjoyment anytime. Endless miles of amazing hiking trails throughout the nearby Chiricahua mountains feature stunning rock formations, evergreen forests, and magnificent waterfalls. The host has been hiking there regularly over the past 15 years, and is available to guide hikes upon request that engage the uniquely powerful earth energy by incorporating meditation and qigong.

Support meetings are offered on a weekly or monthly basis where residents and guests are welcome to share how their practice is progressing, to identify areas for improvement, and to request comments and advice from others.

There is plenty of free time, and residents and guests are encouraged to utilize it to support their higher consciousness lifestyle through reading, walking, hiking, immersion in nature, contemplation, and deepening their meditation and higher consciousness practices. Guests are encouraged to practice digital minimalism, i.e. minimizing the amount of time online, and staring at a screen. Aside from phone service, there is no internet onsite, and more than very occasional use of videos, movies, television, and social media is discouraged. There is good cellular phone reception that can be utilized as a wifi hotspot as necessary, and there are broadband internet and books available at a nearby public library. The Hermitage also has a small collection of excellent books available for guests' use.

The Savanna Hermitage is a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for women, LGBTQ individuals, and people of color. Discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation is prohibited, and all residents and guests must refrain from sexual/romantic advances toward others during their stay.

Absolutely no alcohol, tobacco, cannabis/marijuana, or other drugs are allowed onsite.

Candles, incense, and any type of open flame or fire are prohibited in all buildings and throughout the Hermitage property.

The Savanna Hermitage welcomes practitioners of meditation, qigong, yoga, and other higher consciousness practices. Guests are encouraged to generally perform their solo practice and spend their time in quiet solitude. Mature, experienced, self motivated, independent, and self sufficient individuals with established higher consciousness practices and lifestyles, and high levels of physical, mental, and emotional health and stability are encouraged to apply.

This retreat has selective admission and is only suitable for independent practitioners. Before booking the retreat, please email the host for an application form and any questions you may have. Qualified applicants will be interviewed by video or phone. Upon acceptance and receiving an invitation, please book your retreat at retreat.guru. Shortly after you book the retreat, the host will contact you to discuss what the general format and schedule of your retreat will look like according to your particular needs, and to answer any questions.

Accommodation

Two small private furnished rooms are available for individual guests, each with a separate outdoor entrance, comfortable twin bed with new spring mattress, full bedding, shelves, clothes rack, and table. Each room is equipped with a meditation zabuton mat, seiza bench, crescent zafu cushion, and yoga mat. The rooms are housed in a brand new zero carbon emissions eco-cabin equipped with off-grid solar electric, passive solar heating, natural cooling, rainwater collection, and a passive solar box water heater. In addition to staying in this cabin, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the construction and operation of a simple, inexpensive eco-cabin. Facilities are clean and comfortable, and very basic. Bathing involves standing in a large basin tub and washing with a bucket of 2 to 3 gallons of hot solar-heated rainwater, a large cloth, and a container for washing hair. In addition to the private outdoor bathing stall, guests also have the option to bathe in the privacy of their own room, especially in chilly or adverse weather. There is backup propane for heating water on cloudy days. Each room also has a water container and basin for washing hands and face. All wastewater is collected and reused to irrigate trees. The outdoor dry composting toilet is clean, private, no smell, and very basic. Because the guest cabin is also a silent meditation space, guests are requested to use headphones or earbuds for music or other media, and to limit phone conversations. The two guest rooms share a well equipped kitchenette in the adjacent shed. Cooking appliances include two Instant Pots (digital electric cookers), a two burner propane stove, a microwave oven, a hot air popcorn popper, and an electric kettle for boiling water for tea, oatmeal, etc. Except for the propane stove, all appliances are powered by 100% clean electricity from the solar panels and batteries. The kitchenette is also fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, bowls, utensils, hot pads, towels, napkins, etc. A water container with dishpans filled from the minimally treated rainwater tank is used for washing dishes. There is no refrigerator onsite, and fresh produce is kept naturally cool in coolers. Instructions and recipes are provided to guests for preparing a variety of easy, quick, and healthy meals and snacks with the Instant Pots and other appliances. Guests and the host are also welcome to occasionally or periodically share meals upon coordination and request (optional). Guests are requested to prepare their own food and meals throughout their stay at the Savanna Hermitage. Basic vegetarian food ingredients such as lentils, millet, pinto beans, brown rice, rolled oats, popcorn, walnuts, olive oil, seasonings, and some fresh produce are provided, and guests are welcome to bring and purchase locally their own food preferences. There is a small grocery 10 miles away with very limited options, and the nearest supermarket is 40 miles. The host often has some fresh home grown kale available, and there are plenty of containers provided of reverse osmosis filtered water filled at the water store.
