Jungle Cirque: An LGBTQIA+ Circus Experience

Step into the lush embrace of the jungle and into a vibrant group of queer circus artists. This retreat is an invitation to explore your movement, purpose, and creative vision—whether you're a student, performer, or seeking deeper connection to your practice. What stories live within you waiting to be told? How can your movement—through aerial, acro, dance, or flow—convey exactly what you mean? And how can you cultivate a sustainable, lifelong practice that honors your unique body, with or without injury?

Playing among queer artists of all bodies, abilities, sexualities, and genders, you’ll find a true sense of belonging. Together, we will explore what it means to create and perform, and feel seen as LGBTQIA+ artists, learning how to shape our stories into movement and craft the artistic practices we desire. Through aerial, acrobatics, fire, flow, acro and dance, we will expand our skills, refine our stage presence, and co-create multidisciplinary work—infused with a spirit of play, curiosity, and joy.

Beyond training? We’ll nourish our bodies with delicious meals, hike together to breathtaking waterfalls, trade massages, ease into yoga or flexibility, and dance beneath the stars. Whether it's a playful jam, a fireside gathering, or a final-night cabaret to share our discoveries, this retreat is a one-way ticket to queer joy and circus magic.

What To Expect

This week is about connection, play, and belonging among LGBTQIA+ circus artists. Together, we will:

✨ Uncover our artistic vision and explore how to share our stories through movement
✨ Develop practices that sustain us both creatively and physically
✨ Learn and exchange skills across disciplines, including:

Aerial Arts (trapeze, rope, silks, hoop, duos)
Acrobatics & contact dance
Fire and flow props
Dancing with apparatus (e.g., chairs, props, etc.)
Thai massage & restorative practices
Flexibility, yoga, and aerial yoga
Circus games & playful improvisation
Choreography, stage skills, and performance techniques

Throughout the week, we will hold space for shared experiences—hiking, dancing, jamming, and culminating in a celebratory cabaret showcase where we can witness each other's growth and artistic revelations.

Come as you are. Move as you feel. Leave with a deeper connection to yourself, your craft, and your queer circus family.

Interests - aerial, fire, acro dance, partner acrobatics, contact dance, object manipulation, fire spinning, fans, etc.
18+

This retreat is for the amateur who loves circus arts, the semi pro who wants to leap forth, the pro who wants to redirect to a more authentic path, and anyone who wants to learn something new or to add another discipline to their craft. For those of us who enjoy brave spaces, as well as all of us who need time out to recharge among other LGBTQIA collaborators. It’s for movers who want to tell their stories, for those that feel left out at the studio, or alone in their town, and any of us that love to be on stage or just love to play and feel reciprocation while being themselves.

Seriously… fun, joy, growth, and belonging will be the main takeaways other than the mad skills that the teachers and other attendees will impart during this week of play, practice, and study.

Beginner, Intermediate, and advanced people of all ages, races, genders, bodies, and abilities who are LGBTQIA are welcome to be part of this retreat. We will send out a questionnaire to calibrate the class levels to the guests attending.

There will be 4-5 aerial points. Modifications can be made for injuries/ access needs, but please look at the videos of the terrain and accommodations and inquire if you have specific needs. We are happy to discuss options.

PARTICIPANT AGREEMENT: To create a safe environment conducive to healing and community development, we will ask all participants to adhere to these agreements throughout the week.

recently had the pleasure of attending a retreat in the heart of nature, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt a deep sense of peace and connection with the surroundings. The location was breathtaking—nestled in lush greenery, with serene landscapes and fresh, clean air that instantly made me feel rejuvenated.

The accommodations were cozy yet perfectly in tune with the natural environment. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to provide comfort while maintaining a strong connection to nature. Waking up to the sounds of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves was an absolute delight.

One of the highlights of the retreat was the range of activities available. From guided meditation and yoga sessions to nature walks and mindful breathing exercises, everything was designed to help guests disconnect from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with themselves. The instructors and staff were incredibly warm, knowledgeable, and dedicated to creating a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a place to unwind, recharge, and immerse yourself in nature, this retreat is the perfect destination. Whether you’re seeking personal growth, relaxation, or simply a break from the fast-paced world, this place offers it all. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to return!

Gorgeous and fabulous!
We loved our time at the Jungle Gayborhood. The retreat center is beautifully designed and comfortably nested on the edge of the jungle, close enough to feel nurtured by its vibrancy and just out of it enough to see it and have plenty of fresh air and vistas. Staff was kind, supportive and helped bring out physical healing and pleasure. Programming was light on our particular weekend but it was perfect for us: trekking, spiritual journeys, yoga, social gatherings and fun (optional) games. And they have the best mattresses so you will sleep like a baby!

Awesome retreat in the Costa Rican jungle
This excursion was planned in less than a week, but sure glad we took a chance. It’s like glamping in the jungle with three home-cooked meals a day. We stayed a week, and what a relaxing week it was. Several waterfalls were within a short hike from camp. Being naked is optional. Yoga is every morning. Some nights are movie nights, some nights are sound bath nights. Some nights are fire performer and campfire nights. Although we didn’t go on a retreat week, it was still fun and invigorating. We even got the chance to try ayahuasca, kambo, and rapé one evening, but wasn’t prepared for this unique opportunity. Thanks to Shelby and Jose, Ryan, Eric, Jesse, Mauricio, Brandee, Chef Eric, and Marconi for a great week! We’ll be back.

Wow! What an experience!
Firstly, the gayborhood is absolutely amazing. It's evident there's been time, effort, and planning involved to make it what it is. It had everything I needed to make my stay comfortable and at home. Special shout-outs to the chefs, cleaning team, and gayborhood staff. It's clear that it's a space individuals WANT to be at and spend their time.

The retreat was beautiful. It was an opportunity to release, to be free, and love continuously (sometimes literally!). I've never been to a retreat that was considered party AND retreat and I was a little unprepared mentally and emotionally I discovered. In talking with the staff and learning more, I realized I needed to take more intentional time for me to do more of the work I wanted to personally. That said, the description was on, I just didn't think broad and liberal enough.

Notes for the future. There were times it felt like things were mandatory, or highly encouraged to attend, yet optional. Of course you can't make anyone do anything they don't want to, but in the schedule I do think there should be an asterisk for events that are highly encouraged to attend. For example, the cabaret. What a powerful closing to the retreat. It introduced us to another part of someone we may not have gotten to see. It showed the bravery and confidence that maybe someone channeled just that weekend. And it symbolized a great level of community and support, which I think the gayborhood prides itself on.

I plan to come back next year. And as I continue to talk to participants and continue these relationships, they too want to come back and bring a friend. Thank you for this opportunity and place of love. Looking forward to more with you.

Lifechanging
I cannot begin to describe how transformative this past weekend was for me. I went in with intention, many of which changed when I got there. Within the first 15 hours of being there I felt relaxed, centered, and excited for everything else that was to come.

Immediately after arriving, Ryan and Brandee welcomed me with big hugs. Ryan encouraged me to be fully myself, try new things, and explore every part of myself. Shelby and his staff have put love into every detail of the Jungle Gayborhood, and through each session you can feel their effort shine through.

The Jungle gayborhood will make you feel everything you need to and more. If you're at all on the fence about booking an experience here, do yourself a favor and take the leap. I cannot wait to return.
