Eric Hollander

Eric Hollander is a musicologist, poet, violist, and community music facilitator. He has a BM in viola performance from The Boston Conservatory, an MA in Writing and Publishing from DePaul University, and a PhD in musicology from Brandeis University. Eric wonders about what music is and how it helps while searching for fuller understanding through phenomenological description and spiritual participation. As a poet and performer, Eric is an active member of the Haiga Duo, a spoken-word/viola/accordion ensemble and exercises his enthusiasm for amateur music making with various community, folk, and parish ensembles. As a musicologist, Eric writes and presents on topics bridging the gap between music therapy and music theory. For Eric, music is a way of being amidst the song of God’s creation; music is often a philosophy; music is a rare but precious theology; and music is surely and sublimely a spirituality.

Janira Bremner

Janira Bremner is a daughter of the Caribbean, shaped by the multi-cultural influences of small island identity – Jamaican & Guyanese ancestry: its food, music and sways of being. Since childhood, formal dance training, performance and engagement has been a formative part of her being. And, for thepast two decades she’s pursued an invitation to know the Holy Spirit's beckoning in movement via discipleship, dance education, relocation and vocation. Most recently (the past 10 years), this has led her to residency and engagement in North Philadelphia, where she’s had the pleasure of living into the graces offered in all of the aforementioned beckonings : ) To contact Janira with an interest in sharing a conversation about movement and spirituality, email info@straphaelacenter.org.

Details of this retreat

Join us for a very special experience of the senses in our Chapel. We will engage in the art of music and movement, with sound and silence, motion and stillness, inviting participants to improvise with the direction and gentle facilitation of Eric Hollander and Janira Bremner, our current Artists in Residence. No previous musical, movement or improvising experience is required for your participation.

We will gather as a small group to learn how to connect music and movement with the spiritual life and prayer, express ourselves, create space for one another, and reflect together on the experience. Improvisation (making sound and movement with spontaneity) brings us to a moment of vulnerability and openness – and also to the edge of silence: into which a voice burgeons, moves, and comes to rest.

Spiritual weaving class

I really enjoyed the class! Weaving is more difficult than I expected but I finished my project at home and am pretty happy with it!
Lisa explained well, there was so many yarns, fabrics- choices!! I will continue with projects at home!
