In Person at the Wish-Fulfilling Temple
Led by Segyü Khen Rinpoche Lobsang Wangdu
We warmly invite you to participate in the Medicine Buddha Jangwa, a powerful Vajrayana purification ritual performed for the benefit of those who have passed away. Led by Segyü Khen Rinpoche Lobsang Wangdu, this practice can be dedicated to loved ones who have died recently or many years ago.
Jangwa uses the power of mantra, concentration, meditation, and the Buddha’s words of truth to purify negative karma and benefit the consciousness of the deceased. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, even if a person is experiencing a difficult transition after death, Jangwa can help change the direction of their rebirth, creating the causes for rebirth in a fortunate realm or Pure Land.
During the ritual, powerful purification mantras are recited and mustard seeds are blessed. Through meditation, the consciousness of the deceased is invoked, and the blessed mustard seeds are used as part of the purification practice. The ceremony also includes phowa, the practice of transferring consciousness toward a Pure Land.
This particular form of Jangwa is associated with Medicine Buddha and is considered especially accessible and highly beneficial. While some Jangwa practices require advanced tantric skill in visualization, self-generation, and ritual accuracy, the Medicine Buddha Jangwa can be practiced without those same requirements while still offering profound benefit to the deceased.
The Medicine Buddha Puja will be performed before the Jangwa ritual, creating further causes for purification and benefit. English translations of the practice texts will be available.
Family members and friends are warmly invited to participate and dedicate the ceremony to deceased loved ones, including family members, friends, and ancestors.
For those submitting a deceased loved one for the ceremony:
Please provide a passport-size solo photograph of the deceased and email it to spc@medicinebuddha.org along with the deceased's full name. Do not submit an original photograph, as it will not be returned.
If a photograph is unavailable, the name of the deceased may be written on a piece of paper for the ritual.
Ashes are not required. Please do not send ashes by mail.
Whether you are remembering someone who has recently passed away or honoring someone who died many years ago, this ceremony offers a meaningful opportunity to express compassion and gratitude while dedicating powerful spiritual practices for their benefit.
Everyone is welcome. Registration is required.
