The Franciscan Spiritual Center invites you to engage the practice of solitude in a unique modern location -- 46 acres of forest preserved by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Located between Philadelphia, PA, and Wilmington, DE, the Hermitages are nearby but feel far away.

The revered practice of withdrawing into solitude spans centuries and spiritual traditions. Individuals and groups have long found ways appropriate to their historical time and geographic location to engage in this deeply spiritual experience. For some it was traveling to wild, deserted places. For others it was withdrawing to a nearby mountain or simply a small designated room attached to a traditional religious site.

Hermitage A

Our most accessible hermitage Features: -twin bed -a dedicated disabled parking spot -an entrance ramp -grab bars in the bathroom -a power lift recliner Like all the hermitages, it has all the necessities for a comfortable stay. For the bed and bath: -Pillows, blankets, sheets -Closet with hangers -Bible -Lamp -Toilet, shower, mirror -Towels, washcloth, bath mat For the kitchen and dining area: -Table and chairs -Small refrigerator/freezer -Sink and stove top -Microwave, coffee pot, toaster oven -Small pot and frying pan -Cooking utensils, pot holders, dish towels/cloths -Plates, glasses, cups, flatware -Packets of sugar/substitute, salt and pepper -Trash, recycling and compost bins

Hermitage B

Has some accessibility features. -full-size bed -close to the parking lot -an entrance ramp -full size bed -stable recliner that does not rock or swivel Like all the hermitages, it has all the necessities for a comfortable stay. Hermitage D

Excellent experience! I try very hard to take time daily for prayer and conversation with God, but in my line of work , it is sometimes difficult to concentrate. This long weekend was absolutely the very thing I needed to just " be". I was able to be with the Lord in my silence and when walking around the beautiful grounds. The cabin was very clean and had everything you need. Just a beautiful place to encounter God and fill your "love" cup. I definitely will return!!

Beautiful Retreat

I stayed two nights in Hermitage D, and it made for a perfect retreat. Clean, comfortable, simple -- and yet with everything you need. I especially loved the individual porch that faces the woods. I also liked the option to join the sisters for mass and for meals. They were super sweet, and the food was very good. This was just the retreat that my spirit needed.

Restorative and healing

These Hermitages have everything you need for some quiet alone time. I appreciate the thoughtful details. The little deck to look at the trees, the outside space and creek to wander in. The kitchen that is simple yet has everything you might need to prepare simple meals. I always come away refreshed and grateful for this space.

The couple of days and nights I spent at the Hermitages were absolutely wonderful; restorative and refreshing to my soul.

Weekend at Franciscan Hermitage

From start to finish, my weekend was wonderful. I was filled by the beauty of nature, the silence, and solitude! The comfortable furniture and small but well- equipped kitchen added to my experience. By Sunday I felt rested and renewed by this sacred time with God.
