"This retreat was truly incredible. I left feeling like a new person. All of the staff and participants were lovely, open, supportive, and kind. La Casa de Loto is a magical place and I really didn’t want to leave. Thanks to all who poured their heart into this experience to make it so amazing. If I could I would relive it all over again!"

Experiences on Retreat
"The best retreat ever, wonderful place, food, and Pema is a unique and caring human being. A most for everyone interested in developing your practice and inner calmness "
"I have been to LaWayra several times as a patient and can only describe it as a truly magical place.
Set in Colombian countryside it is surrounded by beautiful nature and refreshing waterfalls.
While everyone on the team goes beyond to make sure you are safe and well taken care of, you get to experience the indigenous medicine with its ancient traditions. With deepest respect to everyone‘s integrity Taita Fernando works very delicately with the medicine to ensure everyone’s safety to experience profound journeys into the subconscious.
Taking part in ceremonies at LaWayra you are able to gain deep insights into yourself, heal traumatic events, depression and anxiety and get in touch with spirituality. Besides that LaWayra offers a safe container to find a wonderful community and heal through the group, shared experiences and learn and heal from each other.
Every time coming back I am incredibly grateful for having this safe space to connect with myself, to others and to grow from this experience. "
"As this was my first experience with Ayahuasca, I was quite nervous of the experience using plant medicine. Because I felt a strong "calling", my husband and I did an extensive amount of research to find the right retreat. I was continuously drawn to LaWayra in our research...and must say that it was an incredible life changing experience. The amenities of the tambo having showers and the views of the mountains while laying in the hammock allowed me to truly relax and find inner peace when not in ceremony. The plant medicine prepared by the Taita with his long lineage of wisdom and care was exactly what I needed. It opened me up to dealing with some really deep rooted childhood trauma and finding forgiveness and self love. Additionally, the word circles allowed me to become vulnerable with other guests, sharing experiences without judgement, helping the strong walls I had built up to come down. The care of the team was incredible and I can say that I always felt truly safe and cared for. I have an enormous amount of gratitude for this life changing experience !"
"Before deciding on our Ayahuasca Retreat destination, we did a great deal of research on options in a variety of locations, including Peru, Costa Rica, and of course Colombia. We decided on LaWayra because of the affordability, the retreat options, and mostly because of the personal testimonials we reviewed from past guests that spoke to the care and attention to safety. We chose the private tambo (hut/cabin) option and an 11-day retreat with six medicine ceremonies. We thought about just doing the four-day retreat but are so glad we chose a longer stay.
The transformative and healing experience during our stay, is nothing short of miraculous. Choosing such a powerful modality of self-care through plant medicine is a decision that will impact our lives moving forward in positive ways that have already begun to unfold. It literally feels like 10 years of therapy took place for both my husband and I over the past eleven days. We also created a bond with the entire staff and volunteers, and with the other guests that will last a lifetime.
If you're considering a plant medicine retreat and you are feeling the call to Ayahuasca, I would highly recommend LaWayra. Don't let fear of vulnerability prevent you from stepping out on your personal path of trauma healing and living life victoriously. Do it for your loved ones; do it for your friends, but most importantly; do it for you! It's one of the best investments you'll make in yourself, and I know you won't regret it!
Much love to you as you courageously journey on your life path. 💗💗💗"
"I love this place, absolutely stunning setting, great and attentive staff and the Shaman is just amazing! I felt so safe and cared for and had a life changing experience. Highly recommend it to everyone!!"
"I've attended multiple times, and my experience has been great. I've also attended other retreats and I've found that the shaman and medicine at this retreat has been the best, and the service is also excellent. Also, great value for the multiple day retreats. Highly recommended."
"Lawayra has struck such an amazing balance between the ceremony, medicine being served by an indigenous Taita, who has had this in his lineage for over 250 years, and the Word Circles, which serve as a type of integration woven throughout the retreat. If I was asked, I would not be able to assign more importance to one of these elements. Both of these together create such a complete and amazing retreat experience, a solid group container, and lasting relationships.
Thank you Sam for what you have committed to and created!"
"well I don't even know where to start, but let's just say this experience has been so magical. I couldn't have picked a better place to live this beautiful moment. The energies in this land, the staff, and Sam have been nothing but amazing to me and everyone here. I'm so happy, and I'm glad I can be reunited to my land, my home, my roots here in colombia and feel the call to participate as a volunteer and help to contribute my love and light for any future patient interested in attending this wonderful medicine. I love this place and I'm very content with what I got out of it. thank you laWayra! ❤️🫂🙏🏼"
"My experience at LaWayra has been nothing short of revolutionary for my life. I am a very particular person, so I took a long time in coming to ayahuasca, largely because of the commercialization of plant medicine, with ancient traditions for individual and communal healing and spiritual exploration being used simply to capitalize on voyeurism, looking for a quick buck behind a facade of care. After extensive experience with LaWayra, I can personally attest to their integrity and authenticity in seeking to provide people with a container to safely take ayahuasca. I wouldn't hesitate in coming here."
"I have been a patient at LaWayra for 8 ceremonies. This place has a special place in my heart and soul. I felt so safe and cared for. I feel privileged to be able to take part of such a beautiful tradition and gift to humanity. I have learned to completely trust Taita Fernando and the whole team in their methods, professionalism and genuine support. The ceremonies held in the Maloka are beyond words. And the music!! Wow!! But LaWayra is so much more than Yage/Ayahuasca. The workshops, word circles, guidance and time spent together makes this experience unique. It is family run and you truly feel at home. The way I have connected to myself and others by sharing this experience has been incredibly healing. It has been a unforgettable experience I will carry with me through out my life. I feel like I've grown equally much from witnessing all my fellow beings in their journeys and stories. Thank you Sam and your family for providing this special place for all of us in need. Thank you everybody involved. The musicians, staff and volunteers. I would recommend this place to anybody willing to get more out of life. Much love and gratitude to all of you ❤️🙏🏽"
"I have been to LaWayra several times over the past 13 months and my experience has been incredible. I have had a lot of positive shifts in my ways of being which I am very grateful for. Thank you to Sam and the rest of the team!
From the Taita (Shaman) to the beautiful views and everything in between at LaWayra, it really is an incredible place to come and heal, grow and learn
From the time you step foot out of the bus that brings you to the retreat from Medellin you feel safe and secure which is super important for work involving Ayahuasca.
The integration LaWayra provides really helps to take your experience and maximise the positive benefits from the ceremonies
I recommend to LaWayra to anyone looking for an ayahuasca experience with an authentic shaman and a loving, caring team "
"We traveled from the US to Medellin to participate in this wonderful experience.
I've have already recommended Amiel and Ivan to friends. The experience was powerful - yet I felt safe and secure. The music kept me grounded while experiencing the highs and lows of the process.
They outlined what to expect up front and wrapped things up with a sumptuous meal. The space was perfect - serene yet not too isolated. "
"What a wonderful experience! Amiel and Ivancho were both so warm and welcoming to my friend Synthia and I. They opened their home and made us feel like family. Their amazing voices and musicianship brought so much raw emotion to the ceremony. The location is so beautiful and comfortable. It was transformative for me and I highly recommend to those seeking peace and inner strength.
Rich"
"Amiel and Ivan were incredible hosts. We felt warmly welcomed into a very safe space. The experience lasted all day the hosts explained carefully what to expect and fully answered questions.
Their approach including introduction and explanation. The spiritual component included focusing on our expectations and goals. I found the music instrumental in keeping me grounded and connected. Amiel and Ivan were incredibly talented musicians. As we wrapped up our lovely hosts provided an amazing spread of delicacies for us to enjoy. We then relaxed and prepared for our journey home.
The closing ceremony included each of us sharing highlights of our experience. Each of us summed it up in one word “gratitude”. I’ve already recommended the experience to many friends.
Simply transformational. "
"We came from Chicago for this experience and frankly it was worth the trip. We felt immensely grateful that Amiel and Ivan shared their home and amazing talents with us. They were kind, knowledgeable, informative - simply amazing individuals to guide us on this trip.
The music was essential to the experience and amazing. Their voices and instruments help ground us to their safe place.
Their process was well organized and we felt safe and loved.
I've already recommended this experience to many friends
The price was very reasonable. "
"I’m still floating from the experience of this incredible retreat. Words can barely do justice to how grateful I am for the kindness and warmth of the people I met—it felt like we’d all known each other for years. Each interaction was genuine and full of heart, leaving me deeply moved by the connections we built together.
The property itself was simply breathtaking. Nestled in nature, every corner seemed to hum with peace and serenity. Surrounded by trees, the sound of birds, and the feeling of being held by the natural world was so wonderful. It felt like a perfect balance between comfort and immersion in the beauty of the outdoors.
The organisation of the retreat was flawless—everything flowed seamlessly. It was evident that every detail had been thought through with so much care, and the facilitators went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcomed, supported, and seen. They created an atmosphere of trust that made it easy to let go, dive deep, and fully experience each moment.
But what truly stood out—what felt absolutely out of this world—was the music. I can only describe it as transcendent. It was as though the sounds carried us somewhere beyond time, weaving together all the emotions of the journey. Each note felt perfectly attuned to the moment, and the music seemed to breathe life into every part of the experience. It wasn’t just beautiful—it was transformational.
This retreat left me feeling deeply nourished, inspired, and connected in ways I didn’t think were possible. If you’re looking for a space to reflect, grow, and connect with wonderful souls, this experience is truly a gift."
"I experienced a silence I have never perceived in my life so far. The food was delightful and the staff really kind. Although Prima did not speak a lot, meditation classes gave me new tools and strategies to use in my daily practice. As a beginner, Yoga was challenging but afterwards I felt the benefits in my body. Thanks a lot."
"Had a very peaceful time and the food was great. Everyone was very nice!"
"Casa de Loto is a wonderful place for everyone who is looking for some peace and to disconnect a few days from the busy day-to-day life. We had an amazing time there. The location is simple but super comfortable. The yoga and meditation classes were incredible, the food delicious and everyone is very warm and friendly. Would have loved to stay longer."
"The 2 weeks a la casa de loto were very ressourceful. In this inspiring environnement and with this good tasty and healthy food, it felt peaceful to be there. A spécial thanks to the mindfulness and yoga teacher Mel, a dedicated and human person.
Thank you all"
"
I am filled with gratitude for the incredible week of peace and tranquility I experienced at the beautiful Casa de Loto, where I engaged in daily yoga practice, meditation, silence, and savored delicious Ayurvedic cuisine. It was a reset that my mind and body sorely needed, and I am eager to continue on this transformative journey. The team at Casa de Loto is a shining example of passion and dedication, welcoming all with open arms and hearts, and inspiring us all to do the same."
"I decided to wait a while before leaving a review. There is often an afterglow effect with hallucinogens and I wanted to wait for things to settle a bit before making any comments on my experience at Lawayra. It seems more honest that way. I'll also add that the former facilitator and a volunteer left a few months ago, and things are a lot less structured and professional now at this retreat than in the past.
With that being said, my experience overall was just okay. There were a few circumstances that really reduced the quality of the experience. And some things came across as a bit disrespectful to the medicine and the seriousness of this ancient tradition.
Lawayra is cheaper than many other retreat centers. That itself doesn't make the place bad, but I do think that a cheaper price does invite SOME people who may take things a lot less seriously. You can end up with people who do things such as talk during ceremonies, people who bring processed junk food to the center because they refuse to stick to the diet, people who spend all their free time on their phones, etc.
As a participant I had no say over other people's actions, which I accept. But as a paying customer, I expected the environment to be a bit more strict and rigid and to hold the guests accountable so that everyone can get the most from their experience. The people who are a part of your group can really affect the atmosphere at the retreat. The place is quite small for the amount of people who are there at any given time. Ayahuasca opens you up to other energy which is why it's so important to have a solid environment to drink the medicine and work through the processes.
Lawayra was a place full of distractions. WiFi stays on full time and I often saw people occupying their minds with Facebook and Netflix and whatever else. It was frustrating that the people running the facility aren't more strict with such things. Phones and social media can easily be as addictive and harmful as drugs or alcohol. Some people might go to an Ayahuasca center in the hopes of disconnecting for a little while.
Socializing was overly encouraged, rather than quiet introspection and taking time to self reflect. There were times when it was difficult to find a quiet place to rest due to all the loud conversations, music, construction noise, etc. It became more of a social event or party than anything else. People were even playing rap music on a speaker at one point. Something I never expected to experience at an Ayahuasca center. I'm also not sure how we were expected to be able to relax and be well rested, when the ceremonies would often keep us up until 1 or 2am and then construction workers show up at 6am and immediately start using grinders and other loud equipment.
I am not writing this review to trash talk Lawayra or the people who own and operate the place. I only want those who are considering this retreat to have the opportunity to see both sides. I think that it is common for these retreats involving plant medicine that most people who have a less than optimal experience remain quiet rather than say anything bad or negative most of the time, but I'd rather speak my mind.
I didn't walk away from my experience completely empty handed. The medicine is strong and the music is beautiful. The taita is a good guide. But the retreat just didn't really seem optimized for deep work and healing. They appeal more to the crowd who want to experiment or want a cool story or pictures for Instagram. If you're searching for a more authentic experience or somewhere to do deep healing, I would recommend going elsewhere. They often said at the retreat that there are many different traditions related to consuming Ayahuasca and that everyone does it differently. But to me they seemed overly dismissive of getting negative input from the guests (or seeming offended by it honestly). There was a strong my way or the highway type of attitude and that's fine. The inability to handle negative criticism in an empathetic and constructive manner is what made me decide to never return to Lawayra. Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope it was helpful. Good luck on your journey."
"Sam's guidance and discourse, about how to take and manage the medicine, demonstrates an especially impressive vocabulary about who participants should manage and make maximum benefit from the experience. To properly describe what such deep journeying is about, and how it so foundationally heals and restores our souls, is not at all easy, even among many more experienced, but Sam explains it in manners that are especially user-friendly and educational."
"In a world where sadly even sacred Ayahuasca is often improperly served among retreat centers that are not always honoring every consideration as to who and how sacred medicines are served and how to hold proper ceremony, Lawayra is doing a fine job, staffed and managed by entirely capable, and ethically super sound team."
"I undertook four ceremonies (three nighttime and one daytime ceremony) in the Fall of 2023 with LaWayra, and my time with them has been nothing short of life changing.
First, being a recent college grad traveling the world on a gap year student budget, I conducted a bunch of research into affordable ayahuasca retreats. LaWayra was the most ideal combination between affordability and credible reviews all over the internet (including on Reddit). One tip I wish I knew before booking - book directly on LaWayra’s website instead of on third party sites like retreat guru. Third party sites charge much more for the same ceremony. Use the money you saved to tip the retreat staff!
The ceremony, housekeeping, and volunteer staff are an incredibly skilled, warm-hearted, and attentive individuals. I’m vegan, and there was plenty of solid vegan breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The taita’s presence was a supremely warming presence during ceremonies, and the combination of healing music, pre-ceremony mediation, and the pristine nature around the ceremony center were amazing additions to ceremonies. Group sizes of 15-25 are a great balance between individualized attention from ceremony staff before, during, and after ceremonies and a diverse community from all over the world with a wealth of different life stories and purposes for pursuing the healing power of ayahuasca.
I came into the ceremony looking to challenge the limits of my perception and to unroot my most ingrained worldviews and beliefs. During the ceremonies, I’ve traveled to fantastical dimensions and had visions/experiences that have fundamentally changed the way I view the world and my place on earth, spirituality, and the bonds between the living/nonliving, human and non human entities of the world. I am forever grateful to the healing and revelatory powers of the medicine whose lessons will profoundly shape me for the rest of my life."
"Lawayra is a magical place. The experience I have had in the week I spent here has been life-changing. It gave me new optimism for the future and provided me answers to questions I did not even know I had. The place is very well managed, it's clean, the food is good, and there is plenty of kind and attentive staff to make you feel safe and at home. Here, I would like to express my thanks to the whole team, Sam, Jarrod, the Taita, the cooks, cleaning ladies, musicians, dogs, and everyone else who helped me have this amazing experience. If you feel the calling for Ayahuasca, I cannot recommend this place enough. "
"Taita Fernando was so attentive through every ceremony ensuring every participants experience with the plant medicine was safe & beautiful. His musical talents bring the ceremony experience full circle with his soothing voice along with his guitars & flutes. He went out of his way to ensure everyone was safe & takes the space seriously. I enjoyed how we connected at the last ceremony & am eternally grateful for his support & validation on my journey & how I was feeling. He understands a woman is powerful & respects us as a whole. I wish I could truly put into words just how powerful yet calming his presence is & I wish him nothing but the best on his journey in shamanism. Thank you Taita! "
"Jarrod brings emotional intelligence, plant medicine expertise experience with a genuine heart & passion for the person that is partaking of the medicine. He truly cares for the person as a whole and tirelessly supports each & everyone’s experience with integration therapy. From group settings to one on one sessions, Jarrod will ensure you walk away with full confidence in understanding your personal experience. His professionalism throughout the entire retreat not only made me feel comfortable opening up but he also made me feel safe; even if outside sources out of our control may have made me feel otherwise. He more than understands every person is unique & will tweak & cater his own professional style to that individual so that they too feel comfortable & safe. He has a beautiful soul that you can’t help but notice & he touches every other soul around him with his warm embrace & helps guide your light to shine through the darkness. Through his integration therapy you are taught by Jarrod that your ‘cracks’ in life are part of the process so that your own self love & light can shine through!"
"I'll try to say things not mentioned often in other reviews:
-If you're skeptical as to why there are only 5 star reviews, its because every single thing that you could think to complain about LaWayra feels so insignificant in the wake of the experience that you couldn't imagine taking even half a star off the rating.
-It's not a luxurious place, though there are many projects in the works to turn it into one. It's going to be an extremely interesting place in 6 months and beyond.
-Take bug spray and be prepared for a wet environment (you're in the clouds) and you likely wont be able to wash any clothes during you stay so pack accordingly.
-The experience is different for everyone, don't have any expectations based on somebody elses experience.
-Jarrod and the team at LaWayra are lovely people that kept me feeling safe and taken care of
-I personally didn't have a very strong connection to the Ayahuasca and I was the only person not to, in a group of roughly 20 people. i still was so glad to have gone through the experience for the little connection i had, and for the lifelong friendships and realizations i picked up.
-Really try and respect the diet, especially for drugs. I wish i had stopped smoking weed sooner, i feel confident it blocked my connection to the ayahuasca."
