About this Retreat
Jaya Yogini was 10 years old when she moved to Sat Manav Yoga Ashram, a traditional Yogic community in Maine’s western mountains. She joined the traditional Guru/shishya (student) lineage of Sat Manav Yoga in 1999.
Driven by so many questions that conventional society leaves unanswered, Jaya found solace and solutions, beyond her wildest dreams, in the classical teachings of Yoga. Leaving a “normal life” far behind, she immersed herself in Yoga, striving for its highest attainment — to change the world by living our true purpose as human beings.
Home-schooled following the Yogic model, Jaya has intensively studied all aspects of Yoga from a very young age, including the formal Yogic practices of asanas and meditation, along with Sanskrit, chanting, and dance, and continues to do so. As the primary teacher and coordinator for the Ashram's Gurukul (school), she designed and ran Yoga programs for children at the Ashram, offsite and in public schools for over a decade.
For the past 5 years, Jaya has been head of Sat Manav's Yoga retreat and outreach event programs. She teaches group and private classes, and speaks throughout New England on the life-changing teachings of classical Yoga.
For the past 23 her ever-growing passion for sharing her extensive knowledge and excitement for Yoga is surpassed only by her passion for living it daily at Sat Manav Yoga Ashram with her Gurus and fellow Yogis.
Details of this retreat
Unlock the most powerful tool you already have—and learn to use it the way that Nature intended for unparalleled health, peace and clarity.
It's the first thing you did when you arrived.
It's the last thing you’ll do when you leave.
In between, breath can transform everything—if you know how to use it.
This retreat is your rare opportunity to learn true Pranayam: the Yogic science of expanding prāṇ—the vital life force—through disciplined, precise breathing practices.
This is the most powerful method. Passed down through an unbroken lineage, practiced daily at Sat Manav Yoga Ashram, and taught as something to weave into your whole life—not just a momentary fix.
Two Ways to Experience It
Choose the Weekend Retreat to dive deep into the essentials—or stay for the Week-Long Immersion to internalize the practice, refine your technique, and absorb the full breadth of how Pranayam can, and will, change your life.
Either way, you’ll receive personal guidance, daily practice, and a felt understanding of what breath can truly do.
Why this retreat is different…
Modern science is catching up to what the Yogis wrote down 5,000 years ago and practiced long before that: the breath can regulate the nervous system, shift brain chemistry, and transform how we feel and function. But Pranayam goes far beyond even that.
When done correctly, with proper rhythm and guidance, Pranayam becomes a gateway to:
Deep emotional stability
Cellular-level healing
Acute mental clarity
And profound, grounded levels of energy that do not burn out
Retreat with us is like stepping back into the ancient days of Yoga, when teachings were shared in close, personal circles. For this reason, we welcome only 4–8 guests per retreat, ensuring depth and intimacy. And while our guest count is small, you’ll be held by the presence of our 12 resident Yogis, embraced as part of the living family of Sat Manav.
You will not find this immersive, traditional style of instruction anywhere else. We live this. Every day.
What You’ll Learn & Practice
• Foundational Pranayam techniques taught for thousands of years in the Ashram’s lineage
• Breath ratios and sequences for specific effects—calm, rejuvenation, clarity
• How to work with prāṇ, not just air—cultivating life force, not just better breathing
• Proper posture, control, and internal awareness to deepen your practice safely and without limit
• How to integrate breath with meditation, movement, and daily life
What You’ll Leave With
A set of tools to steady your mind, calm anxiety, and truly energize
A deepened connection to life and practice
The ability to apply true Pranayam in your life—not just “do breathing exercises”
A felt experience of what it means to live with this insight
Experience the rhythm of Yogi life
You’ll learn within the rhythm of a living Ashram:
Morning sādhana (practice). Guided walking meditation. Midday fire ceremony. Incredible, plant-based healing food-designed to maximize the benefits of Pranayam. Deep and engaging practical & philosophical study. Evening group meditation. Wood fired sauna.
You’ll be supported not by facilitators—but by practicing Yogis who reside at the Ashram, living and practicing what they teach every day. Our retreats are intentionally kept small to allow you the deepest, most immersive experience possible.
