About this Retreat
Donna, creator of Handmade by Ying with Donna, launched her first sewing video in 2022 and has since built a vibrant community focused on sewing, longarm quilting, and pattern making. Through her engaging sew-alongs, weekly livestreams, and practical teaching style, she helps quilters of all levels grow their skills with confidence.
Since 2023, Donna has hosted retreats across WV, PA, TN, KY, and MD, offering workshops in Bargello, quilt-coat construction, and foundation paper piecing (FPP). She brings warmth, clarity, and encouragement to every class and is excited to share her passion with makers at Hidden Falls Farm Retreat.

Join us for a creative and inspiring retreat with instructor Donna Struntz as she guides you through the process of transforming a quilt into a beautiful, wearable quilted coat. Whether you bring a treasured quilt from home or piece together a custom “cheater quilt,” this retreat is a perfect blend of creativity, skill-building, and personal expression.
Over the course of the retreat, Donna will walk you step-by-step through of transforming your quilt into a wearable jacket! She will expertly guide you through preparing it for cutting, constructing your coat, adding bias tape, and finishing with professional-looking details. You’ll enjoy dedicated sewing time, personalized instruction, supportive camaraderie, and the peaceful setting of Hidden Falls Farm—your home away from home for creativity and connection.
What You’ll Make
A fully finished, customized quilted coat using:
A full-size quilt you’re willing to cut and repurpose
OR
A panel quilt option using three coordinating panels from Ligit Quilts (purchase required). These will need to be quilted and finished prior to the retreat.
Supplies Needed
Basic sewing supplies (machine, thread, scissors, rotary cutter, pins/clips, etc.)
Full-size quilt suitable for cutting or 3 quilted legit kit panels
3 packages of bias tape (or handmade bias tape if preferred)
Quilted coat pattern (details provided after registration)

The NeedleNest Suite is a spacious shared room designed for up to four guests, each with a Twin XL bed featuring a 14–16" DreamCloud mattress, soft microfiber sheets, a waffle blanket, and a quilt. Each bed includes a headboard with built-in outlets and a nightstand with additional charging ports.
This room also includes:
Private full bathroom (shared by this room’s guests)
Large walk-in closet with extra pillows, blankets, and linens
Smart TV and ceiling fan

The Patchwork Pair is a thoughtfully designed room that hosts two guests in a cozy space inspired by the charm of patchwork quilting. Each guest enjoys a Twin XL bed with a 14–16" DreamCloud or Nectar mattress, soft microfiber bedding, a waffle blanket, and a quilt. Beds are paired with headboards that include built-in outlets and individual nightstands with extra charging ports.
Additional amenities include:

Shared access to a full bathroom on the upper floor

The Patchwork Pair is a thoughtfully designed room that hosts up two guests in a cozy space inspired by the charm of patchwork quilting. Select this option if you prefer a private room with a larger bed. When selecting a private king room, we will convert the two twin beds into a larger twin bed using the existing bed frames, mattress and a conversion kit. As always all beds have 14–16" DreamCloud or Nectar mattress, soft microfiber bedding, a waffle blanket, and a quilt. Beds are paired with headboards that include built-in outlets and individual nightstands with extra charging ports.
