About the Teacher

Why study with them?

There are times when a path reveals itself quietly—one small step, one gentle opening, and then another. For Magda Costa, her journey into the Dharma began in Brazil in 1990, when she encountered Buddhist teachings woven into Catholic instruction by an American priest. Something resonated immediately, leading her into daily study and practice. A simple newspaper ad for a meditation class drew her to one of Nyingma Institute centers in South America, where the teachings of Tarthang Tulku became a steady presence in her life. Over time, that path unfolded naturally, eventually bringing her to the United States and to her work with Dharma Publishing.

For Magda, the teachings are not simply ideas to understand but invitations to live more fully. Books such as Time, Space, and Knowledge and Skillful Means continue to guide her, offering ways to bring awareness into everyday moments and relationships. Meditation, she says, is the foundation of everything—a space where body and mind come into harmony and clarity arises on its own. Over time, it has become less something she practices and more a way of being, opening her to a deeper connection with life, nature, and a more direct experience of reality.

That same sense of presence carries into the simple joys she treasures—walking along the beach, sharing meals with friends, celebrating meaningful occasions. Her wish for the world is both humble and profound: that all beings may live in peace and harmony, free from fear and hatred, and that we rediscover our natural kindness and connection with one another. Magda’s story reminds us that the path often unfolds quietly, guided by small moments of trust that, over time, reveal something much larger.
