Taita Edgar

About the Teacher

Why study with them?

Taita Edgar Garreta has grown up in a world immersed in the sacred medicine of Yage, the jungle and its medicinal plants.

He is originally from the Inga community of Cundagua which is situated outside of Mocoa and grew up there with his family. From the age of 7, he drank his first cup of Yage with his grandfather who was also a Taita. If you ask him about this, he will often fondly recall stories of these cherished times drinking in the forest with his grandfather and learning from him.

When he grew up he left the community for several years. During that time he served as an assistant (or secretary as it is often referred to here) to an his Uncle, elder Taita Luis. From there he also deepened his connection with the medicine and patients who he met in various parts of the country. Unfortunately Taita Luis became sick after some years and passed away which led Taita Edgar onto a new chapter.

He had a family after that time and spent several years raising his son as a single father. This took priority at the time and meant that he had to stop travelling as much and serving the ancestral medicines. However, he never lost his personal connection with the medicine and with God. Eventually life led him back to being able to treat patients more frequently and work with healing. He now forms part of the Rumi Wasi project where he met Shani and Yeferson seven years ago and formed a lifelong friendship with them.
