About the Teacher
Why study with them?
Romas Tauras is a painter and educator based in Porto, Portugal, whose work explores the interwoven themes of identity, place, and material inheritance. Blurring the boundaries between portraiture and landscape, Romas investigates how the human face and natural topography can be read as one — layers of history, emotion, and environment made visible through gesture and form.
His studio practice often extends into the landscapes he inhabits, foraging natural pigments and found materials that later become part of the artworks themselves — a form of visual storytelling that merges place and presence. His work has been exhibited widely, including at the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, the Museu Municipal Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, and in major Portuguese art biennials in Gaia, Almada, and Moita.
As a teacher and mentor, Romas is known for his depth of knowledge, intuitive approach, and ability to guide each participant into their own authentic creative voice. He currently serves as the art and architecture editor for Five Books and leads drawing workshops and retreats that balance technical exploration with artistic curiosity and personal growth.
