These drives are incredibly beautiful, wending through some of North America's most spectacular mountain terrain. There are flights (approx. 1 hour) from both Vancouver & Calgary to our nearest airport, in Castlegar, which is a scenic 1.5 hours from our door.

Driving from Nelson, follow highway 3A north to Balfour (Kootenay Lake ferry landing), and proceed another 20-25 minutes on Highway 31 north. There is a "Sentinel Retreat" blue road sign on the highway (approx. 60 km from Nelson). Slow down and prepare to take a sharp right turn onto Amundsen Road. The Sentinel is located at bottom of the hill. Please observe signs.

Lovely setting
This was a lovely getaway in a beautiful setting. The site has a lot to offer, the staff is friendly, and the room was very comfortable with a view of the lake.
The walls a little thin which means you can hear conversations and snoring. Nothing a little white noise couldn't hide.

Beautiful spot
The Sentinel is set in a truly peaceful, nature-filled setting — quiet, calm, and perfect for relaxing. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes the whole stay feel warm and easy. I also loved the thoughtful touches: the linens are luxurious, the soaps are beautiful, and the overall vibe is wonderfully relaxed.

That said, the construction of the “hotel” wing could use some rethinking. While the rooms have stunning views, the main walkway runs directly in front of the large windows. It means you’re either closing the blinds (and losing that view) or dealing with people looking right into your room as they pass. The walls are also very thin, so you hear a lot from the hall and neighboring rooms.

Overall, the setting and hospitality are outstanding, but if privacy and soundproofing matter to you, it’s worth knowing before you book.

Starlight Medecine Retreat
This is my second time at the Sentinel. And the second time around was just beautiful first time in the beginning of Summer of 2024 and up to September of 2025 was a big transformation and just coming into the property after a lengthy trip was lightly heartwarming ,I was back!Put me right in the moment and the hi and return invite I received from Janet was so welcoming I felt on some level I was home.I really seen the beauty this time around. Everything was beautiful the Stars at night, the lake, the weather, the people ,the food is - I won't even go there, you have to experience it for yourself if you attend a retreat. My eyes were bigger than my stomach ,so I shared my salmon with Bella,a nice soul.Very sweet little visit.

In the retreat ,I connected in a way I hadn't before. But that's my own personal experience.

The cute cooks are always a pleasure, I love the conversations when I get them to warm up,which doesn't take much effort.
Janet always comes by daily to see what's up and to say hi in her pleasurable way.💛

Whether your in retreat or just staying,I'm sure you'll feel warmly lighthearted. The people are so genuine.❤️You can witness for yourself.
Anyways I could go on but life is a continuing Adventure. I'm looking forward to come back next year hopefully for another retreat maybe something a little different will come up something that I need.
