Troy

Troy Valencia is the co-founder of Root & Wisdom, along with his partner and wife Joaly. He is a modern-day Indigenous scholar-practitioner and respected teacher in the fields of Soteriology and Spirituality. Deeply rooted in his paternal Central African heritage, Troy is a twice-initiated member of the Bwiti tradition and a sacred medicine carrier of Iboga. Overcoming the challenges of being raised in the foster care system, he earned a collegiate basketball scholarship, majored in Biology and Chemistry, and furthered his education with a graduate degree in Analytical Chemistry. His deep passion for the human experience led him to attain a second Master’s in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD). Troy has a unique gift for connecting complex scientific principles with profound spiritual truths, drawing from his deep understanding of Eastern and Indigenous wisdom traditions. He sees Iboga not just as a psychedelic or plant medicine but as a Spiritual Technology that provides a bridge between the physical/emotional and spiritual realms. Rather than merely seeking healing, Troy guides others towards lasting liberation from suffering. In addition to his work in spirituality, Troy has self-produced two internationally recognized albums, Sounds of Medicine and Planetary Attunement, available on all streaming platforms. Jo

Joaly Trinidad, affectionately known as Jo, is a co-founder of Root & Wisdom and founder of Artesana Healing with a rich educational background and deep ancestral roots. Holding an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Media and a Master’s degree in Counseling from NYU, Jo integrates modern academia with the indigenous practices of her Taino lineage. As the great-granddaughter of native touch healers, she blends ancient wisdom with contemporary, research-based methods. Certified as a somatic breathworker, vibrational entrainment healer, yoga instructor, and Kambo provider, Jo brings over four years of experience as a lead facilitator in Iboga ceremonies. Her Afro-Caribbean heritage, rooted in West/Central Africa, fuels her deep connection to Iboga and her commitment to its service. As a Bwiti initiate into the Mabundi Missoko lineage, Jo dedicates her life to preserving indigenous wisdom traditions and fostering empowerment through her non-profit organization Sacred Roots Foundation, dedicated ensuring these practices thrive for generations to come.

Maia

Maia Neveu, the heart behind Sunnup, specializes in counseling, integration, meditation, ceremony, and various forms of soul-centered support. With a spacious and soul-centered approach, Maia helps individuals access their 'full aliveness.’ She promotes empowerment by guiding clients to tap into the wisdom inherent in their own body, mind, and soul. Her philosophy of healing and learning draws from a rich blend of holistic, soul-centric, and nature-based knowledge systems influenced by both Eastern and Western traditions. Adopting a client-led approach, she assists individuals in uncovering their personal truths and discovering what makes them shine. Through this gentle process, she facilitates integration, embodiment, and the development of ways of being that authentically express individual uniqueness. Maia is a certified counselor and meditation teacher and is currently pursuing a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. Alongside her experience as an Iboga facilitator and psilocybin guide, she has a diverse personal background with various plant medicines and practices from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledge systems worldwide. By blending her academic background with a compassionate, soul-centered perspective, Maia’s work with clients is creative, responsive, and deeply insightful.

Iboga with Root & Wisdom... a blessing being words!

Wished I could give Root & Wisdom 10 STARS! ... So, I will lead with BASSE'!! Truth. Troy, Joaly, Maia and the entire team are such a blessing. I have feared this medicine for the past 8 years and have experienced other sacred plant medicines, however, only 10 days before the retreat I spoke with Troy... and I was convinced that fear I had was an illusion I created. The amount of Love, Caring for our Safety and being "of service" was their Priority for me and our small group. The shift and transformation of understanding that my Mind is Not Me is now complete. I know I AM Whole. This was huge for me. Troy is a blessing & gift beyond words to humanity, as is his wife Joaly and their beautiful daughter of 4 months, not to mention Blue with all 150 pounds of this Rhodesian Ridgeback pup supporting my spiritual journey... and of course, Iboga.

Could not recommend more emphatically

I took my family to Root and Wisdom and the care and attention that Troy, Jo and Maia provided far exceeded any expectation. I have been to other plant medicine retreats and nothing compares to what I experienced in my 8 days here. If you are thinking about alternative methods to addiction, anxiety/depression and even neurodegenerative disease look no further. The kitchen staff and service staff were so focused on our experience you forget they are working for you. I am so happy to say I was apart of Root and Wisdom and it is a place I will return.

Amazing

Root and Wisdom was amazing in so many ways. The facilitators are available and care deeply about each and every person. They save space for whatever time you need to talk or work through something. They are always available.
Each person goes for their own reason and at my retreat each person was heard and cared for.
I was a bit skeptical before I arrived and by the time I left I could not believe how much love and selflessness was provided.
Whether you are going to Root and Wisdom for medical, spiritual, trauma or addiction, there is help there.

Deeply Transformative, Sacred, and Rooted in Integrity

Attending this retreat with Root and Wisdom was one of the most profound and life-affirming experiences I’ve ever had. As someone stepping into plant medicine for the first time, I couldn’t have imagined a more supportive, intentional, and sacred environment.

Jo and Troy are remarkable stewards of the medicine—walking with deep integrity, humility, and respect for the ancestral lineage of Iboga. Their leadership is rooted in love, truth, and a genuine commitment to each participant’s healing journey. Sitting with this powerful medicine in their care was a true honor.

The space they cultivate—especially within a BIPOC-centered container—was nurtured with reverence, cultural sensitivity, and spiritual depth. Every aspect of the retreat was thoughtfully designed and held with love, creating a safe, grounded container where I could be vulnerable. The jungle setting was absolutely breathtaking, enhancing the connection to self, nature, and spirit in the most intimate way.

The support team—Maia, Brayan, and Zaida—were equally incredible, offering gentle presence, wisdom, and care that made me feel truly seen and supported throughout the entire process.
