About this Retreat
Troy Valencia is the co-founder of Root & Wisdom, along with his partner and wife Joaly. He is a modern-day Indigenous scholar-practitioner and respected teacher in the fields of Soteriology and Spirituality. Deeply rooted in his paternal Central African heritage, Troy is a twice-initiated member of the Bwiti tradition and a sacred medicine carrier of Iboga. Overcoming the challenges of being raised in the foster care system, he earned a collegiate basketball scholarship, majored in Biology and Chemistry, and furthered his education with a graduate degree in Analytical Chemistry. His deep passion for the human experience led him to attain a second Master’s in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD).
Troy has a unique gift for connecting complex scientific principles with profound spiritual truths, drawing from his deep understanding of Eastern and Indigenous wisdom traditions. He sees Iboga not just as a psychedelic or plant medicine but as a Spiritual Technology that provides a bridge between the physical/emotional and spiritual realms. Rather than merely seeking healing, Troy guides others towards lasting liberation from suffering.

Joaly Trinidad, affectionately known as Jo, is a co-founder of
Root & Wisdom and founder of
Artesana Healing with a rich educational background and deep ancestral roots. Holding an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Media and a Master’s degree in Counseling from NYU, Jo integrates modern academia with the indigenous practices of her Taino lineage. As the great-granddaughter of native touch healers, she blends ancient wisdom with contemporary, research-based methods.
Certified as a somatic breathworker, vibrational entrainment healer, yoga instructor, and Kambo provider, Jo brings over four years of experience as a lead facilitator in Iboga ceremonies. Her Afro-Caribbean heritage, rooted in West/Central Africa, fuels her deep connection to Iboga and her commitment to its service. As a Bwiti initiate into the Mabundi Missoko lineage, Jo dedicates her life to preserving indigenous wisdom traditions and fostering empowerment through her non-profit organization

Benjo Podlech — Ceremonial Guide & Keeper of Ancestral Medicine
Benjo Podlech is a respected ceremonial guide, musician, and student of ancestral traditions whose work bridges ancient shamanic wisdom with the needs of the modern world. For more than a decade, he has immersed himself in the study and practice of sacred plant medicines and fire traditions across Mexico and South America, learning directly from elders and wisdom keepers who have shaped his path.
His approach is grounded, heart-centered, and deeply rooted in lived experience with San Pedro, mushroom medicine, and the land's cosmology. Benjo’s devotion to remembering, co-creation, and the teachings of the earth shapes every space he holds.
