Details of this retreat

Most people aren't really here. We're in our heads — replaying yesterday, rehearsing tomorrow, defending positions no one's attacking. This program is built to interrupt that. This is a place to stop arguing, and start seeing reality as it is.

This program is for people ready to start the new year by shifting the direction of their life — not with a resolution, but by changing the mindset, the attitude, the pattern that's been running the show.

Most retreats are designed to make you feel good. This one is designed to make you face yourself.

You know what it feels like to almost change — the insight, the clarity, the moment everything seemed possible, followed by life resuming and the patterns right along with it. Real change means facing what you've learned to manage, avoid, or explain away — and that's hard to do alone, in your normal environment, with your normal distractions intact. Ten days here, away from the holiday noise, mean a full digital detox: no phone, no screens, no social media — nothing to disappear into when it gets hard.

The days are built around practice, stillness, and honest reflection — questioning the beliefs you've never actually examined, the ones running quietly underneath everything you do — until what's usually avoided has room to surface. What's underneath all of it is simple: this moment, exactly as it is. You don't need to understand spirituality for that. You've already felt it — the moment the noise drops and you're simply here: the taste of the food, the sound of the jungle, the face of the person in front of you.

Chi guides the process. What he offers isn't advice. That kind of attention is rare — most people go years without it: one person who will not let you fall back asleep to yourself.

It won't be comfortable. It is not meant to be. It is meant to work.

This is for people ready for the shift — serious enough to finally do this properly. If that's you, you've found it.

THE RETREAT EXPERIENCE

You walk to the Shala with nature awakening around you. You sit, and the day begins.

The morning meditation is guided in its simplicity: observing the breath, the body, the sensations, and the thoughts as they come and go. No interpretation. Just the practice of staying with what is there.

The day has a structure, and the structure holds you. Meditation at dawn. Movement that wakes the body and clears what the mind has been holding. Breakfast. Juice. Lunch. Space between all of it for reflection -- not enforced quiet, but room to actually notice what's happening in you instead of reaching for a screen. Patterns become visible. The stories you have been telling yourself stop having anywhere to hide.

Each morning and evening, Chi gives a talk on the nature of the mind, the root of suffering, and the challenges that arise in this process. Clear, practical knowledge delivered at exactly the moment you need it.

By the end of each day you are tired in a different way than you are used to. Not from doing, but from seeing. From staying present with what you would normally move away from. The day closes. Tomorrow the structure holds you again.

This retreat is an honest confrontation with your own mind. Your patterns, your avoidance, your pain, and what becomes possible when you stop moving away from them. No phone to disappear into. What comes up stays present until you learn to work with it.

Who This Is For

This retreat is for you if you are done with surface-level change and ready to go deeper -- whether this is your first real attempt at self-work or your fifth. If you've tried other practices and sense there's more work to do, this gives you direct, daily contact with someone working specifically with what's running in you.

If you've never done anything like this before, there's nothing you need to have done first. You'll be met exactly where you are. If you function well in the world but sense something unresolved underneath, this is built for you.

WHAT MAKES THIS RETREAT SPECIAL
Most retreats teach you something. This one removes what's in the way.

There are things in you that you cannot see alone. Because the mind, left to itself, will always find a way to protect what it knows. Real change requires someone outside that system entirely - someone who can see clearly what you are too close to see yourself.

What makes this retreat genuinely different is Chi's direct, one-on-one presence throughout the 10 days. Chi doesn't work from a method or a doctrine. There is no rulebook here, no ideology to adopt, no prescribed way to live. He sits with you, every day, and shows you exactly what is operating in you right now. What he is offering is a direct, unsparing reflection of what is actually limiting you. Your justifications. Your complaints. Your blind spots. Your judgments. The way you see yourself, the way you see others, the way you see life. That is what he puts the light on.

You will leave with a recorded session, a personalized action plan, and a clear understanding of what has been running your life and what to do about it.

That continuity is built into the retreat from day one.

Directions

--Getting to The Essence--
The retreat is located in Macario Gómez, a small town on the edge of the jungle outside Tulum, Mexico.
The closest airport is Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport — also known as Tulum International Airport (TQO) — in Tulum, Mexico, approximately one hour by car. Cancún International Airport (CUN) in Cancún, Mexico is one hour and fifty minutes away and offers significantly more international flight connections. For most guests, Cancún will be the practical choice.

--Arrival--
Please plan to arrive by 2:00 PM on your start day. You're welcome from 11:00 AM to settle in before the program begins. If a 2:00 PM arrival isn't possible for any reason, please arrive the evening before and stay in the area — there are good options nearby. Arriving rested and on time is part of entering this properly.

--From the Airport--
The most straightforward option is a private taxi transfer booked in advance. We recommend airportstaxitransfers.com — they use Google Maps and will get you directly to our door without hassle. Simply enter your destination as The Essence Community & Retreat Center and you're set.
If you arrange your own driver, use that same exact name when sharing the location, and make sure it's saved on your phone before you go. Not all drivers use Google Maps, and we've had guests end up at the wrong location when the address wasn't precise. The exact name is what gets you here reliably.
If budget is a consideration, take an ADO bus from Cancún Airport (CUN) or Tulum Airport (TQO) to Tulum center, then a short taxi or colectivo to Macario Gómez.

--Before You Leave Home--
Activate mobile data before you travel. You'll want to be reachable during the journey, and reliable Wi-Fi on the road isn't guaranteed. Straightforward to sort in advance — don't leave it for the airport.
