A Film About Vision, Devotion, and the Preservation of Tibetan Wisdom
A Higher Purpose is a deeply moving documentary that explores the extraordinary vision of Tibetan lama and teacher Tarthang Rinpoche, who—exiled from his homeland—dedicated his life to preserving and revitalizing the endangered wisdom traditions of Tibet. Through rare glimpses of the spectacular Odiyan Retreat Center during its creation, the film traces how his vision took root and flourished, giving rise to a constellation of organizations—each a living vessel for transmitting sacred knowledge, art, and values to future generations. In a remarkable expression of what one individual could accomplish through the religious freedom offered in America, Rinpoche transformed the spirit of altruism into action—establishing enduring institutions to carry forward Tibetan culture, philosophy, and spiritual practice in a new land.

Through intimate interviews with students, colleagues, and family members—interwoven with evocative, textured archival footage—the film reveals the vast scope and spiritual audacity of this decades-long endeavor. From the preservation and historic global distribution of sacred Tibetan texts, to prolific publications of English Dharma works, to monumental achievements in sacred art and architecture, and large-scale ceremonies held at the site of the Buddha’s enlightenment—each project arises from a singular, luminous intention: to protect and share the inner treasures of Tibetan culture

Yet A Higher Purpose transcends the chronicle of cultural preservation. At its heart, it is an inquiry into what becomes possible when human beings align their lives with a purpose greater than themselves. The voices of Rinpoche’s students—builders, editors, printers, artists, and directors—reveal the transformative power of trust, and the integrity and creative dynamism that emerge when individuals are empowered to serve something vast and meaningful. Their stories illuminate a joy that arises not from recognition or reward but from the quiet fulfillment of offering one's best.

Rejuvenating and beautiful
The cabins were surprisingly large, very clean and comfortable. The setting is serene, and we appreciated both the beauty of the surrounding nature in the day time as well as the unbelievable star visibility at night! Food was nutritious and tasty with plenty of options. We appreciated the meditation classes offered but also felt free to explore and take the retreat time at our own pace. The atmosphere is very uplifting and welcoming. We'll be back! Thank you to all the very kind staff!

Well-planned, engaging, welcoming, thoughtful, restorative, stimulating experience. Ben was a perfect facilitator. Ratna Ling staff were terrific hosts, the accommodations sweet and comfortable, delicious food, the redwoods were inspiring and the meditation class and temple tour a joy (thanks, George!). Loved watching the gardeners across the street tend to the plants and grounds. Thanks!

Amazing day spent well, great introduction to Budhhist principles
I wanted to find a mindulness / yoga / meditation retreat for my birthday but could not find any 3 days ones in time. I stumbled upon Ratna Ling's 1 day 2nd Saturday retreat (9 am - 5 pm). The drive upto the location was so beautiful and the property is so serene and calming. This was the perfect introduction to Buddhist principles as we enjoyed the meditation practice in the beautiful temple followed by some Kum Ye yoga. We were served a delicious, vegan lunch with some great conversations with fellow patrons. The afternoon is free to choose activities, as I hung out in the library reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff's friendliness and the ability to be alone with my thoughts. I would love to return for longer retreats in the future.

Beyond my Expectations
I had my first of what I hope to be many, visits to Ratna Ling for a Yoga and Mindful Money retreat. What stunning jewel of a place. The retreat was so lovely and educational. The yoga was fantastic for ALL levels, the gentle education about Ratna Link was wonderful. The accommodations were EXCELLENT. But the food was so good! Every little detail in the vegetarian (lots of GF options) offerings were delicious and plentiful. What an incredible resource we have right here in the Sonoma Redwoods. Looking forward to another retreat here.
